A Hack for Smoother, Safer Steps

Have you tried the tennis ball hack yet?

This simple, time-tested trick has helped many older adults move with greater ease. Just cut an “X” into two clean tennis balls and slide them onto the back legs of a standard walker.

It’s a small change that can make a big difference in everyday comfort, safety, and mobility.

Why it works:

Allows for smoother movement—especially over carpets and thresholds

Reduces friction that can lead to tipping or imbalance

Cuts down on noise, which can be helpful for nighttime use

Helps protect floors from scuffs and scrapes

Pre-cut walker balls are also available online or at medical supply stores. Some even come in bright or patterned designs to add a personal touch. Just make sure they’re securely attached, and check them regularly for wear.

Important Safety Note:
This hack is best for standard walkers used indoors. It’s not recommended for front-wheel walkers or uneven outdoor terrain. In those cases, glides or wheels designed for walkers are a safer choice.
